Happy 4th of July

4th of July. Independence day. The day americans celebrate freedom. We, here in Portugal, also celebrate freedom. The 25th of April is a celebration day. Our independence day. In 1974, fascism was defeated. We became a free country. Free to speak what we want. Free to walk the streets handing hands, kissing and having a girlfriend/boyfriend. Free at last.

But, to be true to history, the people should have no right to celebrate anything. The people should still be under the fascist government. For the people did nothing for the thing they call the revolution. Oh, the revolution. A revolution made by the government employees. A revolution made by a group of militaries that got on their tanks, grabbed their guns and marched the streets, ready to shoot... flowers. They loaded the guns with flowers. They entered the official residence of the president and took the power. We were free at last.

People say it was a peaceful revolution. It really was peaceful, there were no shots fired, and if there had been I don't think flowers would kill anybody. But it was not a revolution. It was a parade of military armament that led to the president's residence, where he awaited them, peacefully. And peacefully he left. And we were free at last.

Portuguese people were always a bit passive. We like to wait and see. Revolution is made from the couch and not on the streets. protests are thrown at the TV. We occupy our own houses, instead of the squares. We fight. Fight against moving, but we fight.

I love my country. I love my people. But we need more. Happy 4th of July.
